Like many Americans my age, I grow up with a positive association to fluoride. Toothpaste commercials told me that fluoride helped prevent tooth decay and that I should brush my teeth with fluoride toothpaste, so I used it every day. The dentist gave me fluoride treatments for my teeth. Fluoride was also added to municipal water supplies, so drinking tap water (and anything made with it) cave me a daily dose of fluoride too. Like most other people, I assumed it must be healthy. Otherwise, why would people add it to toothpaste and water? Many years ago though, I started hearing rumors about fluoride being potentially unhealthy. I realized I'd never looked into fluoride and did not really even know what it was and why I should be consuming it. I had to admit that all my knowledge of fluoride was extremely come from the people who were marketing it. […]

I used to scoff at people who would say they were so busy they “forgot to eat.” When I was in college, I was an art major and spent many, many hours in the art department building working on projects. I remember being there late at night or working the weekends away, and other students would lament that they hadn’t eaten all day because they were so focused they “forgot.” How could someone forget to eat?? I never seemed to be able to stop thinking about food, as much as I wanted to. I was either considering when it was time to go eat or scrutinizing if I’d eaten too much or trying to watch portions so that I could lose weight. One day several years later, I was at marketing conference and invited to a fancy restaurant to join a group of highly successful entrepreneurs. As I looked over […]

Six months ago an old school friend and I were chatting over coffee, putting the world to rights as women do. She was bemoaning her lack of success in meeting the “right sort” of men. I asked her if she had tried using an internet dating service, and the look of horror that quickly appeared on her face gave the instant answer – of course not! Internet dating, she informed me, was for the sad, desperate, geeky or freaky. Sadly this type of response is typical of people from all walks of life. Why sadly? Because those who instantly dismiss such services are missing out on a great opportunity. The traditional argument for not using the internet to meet someone is that it is not natural. So what is natural? Where have people traditionally met their husbands, wives, lovers, and friends? Statistically, over the past 50 years the most common […]

What is the price of your body fuel at breakfast? Are you loading up on caffeine and sugar, when you stop for those 16 ounces of coffee and a large glazed donut for your breakfast, as your drive to work? This type of breakfast is very poor quality fuel for your body and adds a great deal of stress to it as well. You know that you have got to keep pumping in more caffeine and sugar just to keep going through the morning or you will just fizzle out altogether. This type of routine will leave you jittery, tense and very irritable. You will notice you are even more vulnerable to stressful feelings as well. On the other hand skipping breakfast altogether is monumentally worse. Why do you want to start a perfectly great day at a distinct disadvantage? You should not make yourself feel empty inside. This only […]

When winter arrives we want to snuggle under the covers and watch movies all day long. With that we want to enjoy delicious warm foods that make us feel comfortable and cosy. Everyone has their favourite winter dish and here are few of the popular ones. Soup is a wonderful comfort food for colder days. It heats you up instantly and gives you a warm feeling throughout your body. If you enjoy this dish, then you will love the Soup Kettle because it is a great way to keep a pot of soup heated throughout the day and ready to serve. Pasta dishes are the perfect comfort food. There are varieties of pasta dishes to choose from and each one can be enjoyed on a cold winter day. Lasagne with the layers of pasta sheets and minced meat along with other tasty ingredients is delicious and flavourful. Spaghetti Bolognaise served […]

The Simple Magic of Herbs Over the years I have tended everything from a 30 by 30 foot monster herb garden, to the odd herb here and there in the garden, to a small plot near the back door. My favorite is a beautiful pot planted with my own favorites located in a sunny spot that is handy to the kitchen. Hint: this makes a welcome and thoughtful hostess gift throughout the season. A Brief History of Herbs It is probably safe to absorb that the earliest use of herbs with foods was probably tied to the ability of herbs to mask the taste of less than fresh food. Not only did herbs and spices make bad or even spoiled food taste better, over precedent centuries we have discovered that the judicious use of these fresh ingredients can actually work magic to elevate ordinary food from ho-hum to yum. Organic Argan Oil from Morocco It is obtained from the nuts of Argan tree. The argan tree’s low cultivation region of 700,000-800,000 hectares in the South Western part of Morocco makes it a unidentified class to many individuals. The Argan tree’s nuts are crushed to receive very useful oil. The leftover part is used for uses like oxen feed and for warming. Berber women of the district have been producing and using argan oil since centuries for eating as well as Moroccan medication purposes. Citizens abroad are more and more interested in this oil either for its cosmetic and nutritional qualities. The argan tree has reasonably a long life of about 150 to 200 years due to its resistive property. The Argan tree has very well modified itself to thrive and outlast in the hot and dry conditions of the South Western regions of Morocco. In order to search for […]

Why buy organic? Is it really better for you? What are the benefits? Does it really give you a lot more nutrition? Will it really make me feel better? Is it cost efficient? Let’s start with the basics. The word organic is based on the way farmers grow and produce products such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains and even meats. If a product is produced organically farmers do not use chemicals to fertilize, rather they use a better rotation process and use natural items such as manure for fertilization. There are no toxins, artificial colors or preservatives when a product is produced organically. Another name for organic could be "Nature’s Way." Now that you know what it means to go organic, let’s look at the effects of not eating organically and compare. If a product is not labeled 100 percent organic, then it has been processed with chemicals or pesticides […]

I always look forward to the December issue of Entrepreneur magazine. That’s the issue that features the publisher’s annual pick of hot businesses, markets, and trends for smart entrepreneurs – or those who aspire to be. Some of the high tech businesses cited like mobile gaming or online learning tend to require six and seven figure start up costs. This can seem daunting (although not impossible) for the person just venturing into self-employment. So I’ve decided to focus on the markets, trends, and businesses that speak to someone operating on a somewhat more limited budget. Let’s start with hot markets: HOT MARKET: Middle-Aged Women Since I’ve recently entered my last year in my 40s, I thought it only appropriate to start with this group (although like most boomers, I still have a hard time thinking of myself as anything close to “middle aged”). Not surprisingly, products and services for women […]

A funeral doesn’t have to be family and friends sitting in front of a dead body saying the rosary. Today many people are shying away from traditional memorial services and choosing instead to create a memorable, personalized life celebration. You may have some questions such as: Why Should I Have a Service at All? Services are really about love. You are taking the time and expressing and sharing the love that you felt for that person. It’s important to celebrate but not at the expense of acknowledging that something important has been lost. The best services mix memories, comfort and encouragement. You need to take this time to share your loss, to laugh and talk and share your thoughts and feelings with each other. Where Should I Hold the Life Celebration? Some funeral homes and cremation societies have rooms for you to use. If you are members of a congregation, […]
